The Maritime Side of the US Civil War

Small converted merchant ships helped the Navy carry the war into Southern Rivers (ORN)

Most people do not realize that the US is and has always been dependent on its Maritime power to maintain its place in the world.  The armies are the subject of most of the attention focused on the civil war.  History of the Navy, Merchant Marine, and Revenue Cutter Service has largely been ignored.
Centered in northern Illinois and Indiana, the members of the Union Naval
Historical Society are dedicated to bringing that history to the public through the medium of living history.  We are the only Civil War living history group to operate a dedicated steam powered craft, and she has made appearances in the Midwest and on the gulf and east coasts.  Our future plans include a more accurate, larger steam powered craft carrying our boat howitzer.  We are also available for educational living history programs at schools and community organizations.  These programs run 30 min to 2 hours and cover every aspect of the war.  For information E-mail Robb Thomas at USN1861@aol.com
